That afternoon when Miranda showed up to Jesse’s office, she was pleasantly surprised to find that Noah Warner was waiting for her. Jesse had him waiting for her in what seemed to be an unused office or meeting space. The walls were bare and the only thing in there was an empty table and a few chairs. Nothing fancy, but she didn’t need fancy. She just needed privacy.

“Thank you so much for meeting with me,” Miranda said to the young man seated across from her. His shaggy, mousey brown hair hung down in his eyes as if it were a curtain between him and the rest of the world. “I’m sure you’re busy.”

He shrugged noncommittally and rather than keep up with the formalities, Miranda decided to just get to the point. “I was told that you might have been running out in the forest at the edge of town yesterday. Is that true?” she asked.

Noah looked up, surprise in his eyes. Jesse must not have told him why he was meeting with her, which she found interesting.

“It’s okay, I’m like the police for paranormal beings,” she explained. “I’m just here to make sure everyone gets along okay. You’re not in any trouble,” she assured him. “I just have a couple of questions and then you can go on your way.”

That seemed to help him relax, but only a little. “Y—yeah, I was over there yesterday,” he stammered.

She nodded patiently. “Did you go near a house? Maybe one where a vampire lives?”

“No!” he said quickly but then seemed to collect himself. “No,” he said much calmer. “I try to stay away from people if I’m like that.”

Miranda was a little surprised at that. Most werewolves actually liked running through the streets in their wolf form. She’d had to get onto a number of them through her time here already. She wasn’t sure what it was, but every full moon she had to have a talk with someone about it. Not that she really got onto anyone too much about it. It was all harmless fun, after all. Just like, if Noah Warner had been the one at Henry’s yesterday, she doubted he’d meant anything by it. Wolves could be curious and playful in the right mood.

“Well, if you hear of anyone going around his house, can you please tell them not to? He’s a very old one and they tend to be not as forgiving as the rest,” she tried to explain. “I think he’s about as territorial as you werewolves are,” she chucked but she noticed he flinched at the word. She paused. “Still getting used to it?” she asked gently. He nodded quietly. “Hey, it’s okay. I’m sure there have been plenty of others that took a bit to get used to the idea too.”

Noah seemed to sit up a little straighter. “That’s what Jesse said.”

“He’s not wrong—and he’s a good guy to have in your corner. I’d listen to him.” She thought about asking him about Kay but decided she’d made him uncomfortable enough.
